The Chrysler Firepower concept car (2005)

Chrysler Firepower concept car

News - the Firepower has officially been canned due to the cost involved.

Based on the Viper but powered by the SRT8 drivetrain, the Firepower brings up memories of fast DeSotos (among those who have memories of fast DeSotos), while making Viper-like styling and cornering available to those with less in the way of racing ability and more appreciation of creature comforts. The automatic transmission and less-powerful-but-still-potent Hemi make the Firepower quite formidable yet easier to drive for those who are not professional racers, and also bring the price down considerably. A tinted glass roof extends to the rear liftgate, allowing driver and passenger an enhanced feeling of spaciousness. The chrome plate, which looks blank in the Chrysler photos, contains the word "Firepower."

The lighter weight allows the Chrysler Firepower to come near Dodge Viper speeds - or at least to 2004 base-model automatic Corvette speeds (0-60 in 4.5 seconds, top speed 174 mph). The short-long arm Viper suspension is used for the ultimate in traction, and we suspect that, barring any major retuning for comfort, the Firepower may actually out-corner the Viper itself, due to its lighter engine.
