Following the success of the faux-wood-sided PT Cruiser, Chrysler is reportedly considering a Liberty with the same treatment, possibly to carry the venerable Wagoneer name.
The last F-bodies have been built, and the historic vehicle is out of production. While the Camaro, Firebird, and Trans Am were big sellers in the 1970s, the 1993 redesign, which greatly increased performance at the cost of comfort, led to increasingly low sales numbers.
We've finally made it possible to search the news. There's a quick search feature at the bottom of the page - feel free to use it! There may be some gaps or mismatches, but it should generally work fine. Please don't do a search for "Chrysler" or "Dodge"...!
Our earlier story on the Cadillac SRX appears to have been wrong. Scott Kissinger, who is working on a new site called The Caddy Edge, wrote: "Caddy was looking into using the Trailblazer platform for a model, however that model is _not_ the SRX. The SRX is based on the Sigma platform which is shares with the CTS."
According to R.L. Polk's annual survey, the company that beat everyone in owner loyalty - that is, the percentage of owners who keep coming back for more vehicles from the same company - was General Motors. By brand, Ford was the loyalty leader. One interesting result was that GM, with the top corporate loyalty, still managed to recapture only 68 percent of buyers. Only a single Japanese vehicle led a segment (the Honda CR-V), while only one Chrysler vehicle (the Town and Country) led a segment.
These days, it seems like every Chevy truck ends up being a Cadillac - along with the Chevy Corvette. The TrailBlazer is the most recent target of the luxury automaker, which will be adopting the platform for its 2004 SRX.
The Mercedes plant in Alabama will be used to produce a new car-based SUV, the Grand Sports Tourer (GST), as well as the redesigned M class SUV which is reportedly based on the next-generation Grand Cherokee. The plant will double in production and the number of employees. The GST is expected to seat six passengers, and will compete with a new Volkswagen and Volvo which are expected soon.
Siemens is reportedly visiting Chrysler's electronics plant in Huntsville with a view to acquiring it; PetitionOnline.com has two "separate Chrysler" petitions, one with 628 signatures, the other (concentrating on possible fraud in the way Chrysler was acquired) has 128. The one with 628 signatures asks Daimler to return Chrysler to American management and, in essence, to continue to design and build Chrysler and Dodge cars in North America, using Chrysler engineers and employees.
Sterling Marlin, driving a "Dodge Intrepid R/T" NASCAR car, started the Sharpie 500 in 27th place, but held on for a seventh-place finish. Marlin picked up 52 points on Mark Martin and now enjoys a 95-point cushion over second-place Martin. Marlin also extended his advantage over Jimmie Johnson by 85 points and picked up 55 points on Tony Stewart.
The bad news for Marlin, who has led the standings after 23 of the 24 events this season, is that Jeff Gordon won the race and the three-time champion moved to third in the standings, 111 points behind Marlin. Gordon broke a 31-race winless streak and gained 39 points on Marlin at Bristol. With 12 races remaining on the 36-event schedule, five drivers are within 162 points of Marlin's lead.
