June 11, 2002: Pillette Road to see new life?

We've received an "insider tip" that a full size Dodge sport-utility is planned for Pillette Road again, with a lower price than the Expedition (thanks to fewer luxury options) along with a similar Jeep to sell at a higher price range, and finally provide Jeep with a vehicle larger than the Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee, huge when it appeared, has now been dwarfed by the Silverado and F-Series based SUVs, and the SUV craze shows no sign of slowing. This is still a rumor, but it makes sense - it would build upon pre-existing and capable vehicles (the new Rams), require no new drivetrains, and could presumably be built with relatively few modifications to the existing vehicle.

June 7, 2002: Dodge Ram - minor recalls

Chrysler is recalling some 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 pickups to reinforce an axle bracket, and also 1997-1998 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 diesels to replace a fitting in the engine compartment. The Ram 1500 recall only affects four wheel drive models built before November 2001, and is a long-term durability issue regarding a weld on a rear axle bracket. The Ram 2500/3500 recall concerns a fitting that could corrode from road salt in the Midwest. As far as we know there have been no accidents from these issues.

June 7, 2002: Chrysler shuffles execs

Chrysler Group today announced several executive appointments within its worldwide Manufacturing organization.

Craig Corrington, 51, was appointed Vice President -- Truck and Activity Vehicle Assembly Operations, Stamping and Components. He reports to Thomas W. LaSorda, Executive Vice President -- Manufacturing. Corrington succeeds Roger D. Ruggerio, who will retire later this year.

Reporting to Corrington will be Carolyn M. Carlson, 48, General Manager -- Components. She will oversee the Huntsville Electronics, McGraw Glass, Ajax Trim, Etobicoke Casting and New Castle Machining and Forge plants, and will provide liaison support for the Dayton Thermal joint venture with Behr [in other words, the sale of Dayton Thermal to Behr. Note that McGraw, Huntsville, and Ajax are being closed or sold, and that rumors are currently circulating around New Castle. Hence, you should probably be worried if Carolyn takes over your plant!]

Bruce D. Coventry, 49, was appointed to the new position of Vice President -- NAFTA World Engine. He will report to the World Engine Global Steering Team and to Richard Chow-Wah, Vice President -- Power Train Manufacturing and Core Team Leader. Coventry will be appointed to the Global Engine Alliance LLC, an engineering joint venture with Hyundai Motor Company and Mitsubishi Motors. He will work with his counterparts at Hyundai and Mitsubishi on the design, development and manufacturing processing of a new family of gasoline engines. Coventry will also lead a joint team to study manufacturing these engines in the NAFTA region.

Coventry joined the Chrysler Group in 1995 as a Manager -- Manufacturing Engineering. He was most recently Vice President -- Engine/Foundry/Axle. He holds an undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering/Management from GMI, and a Master's degree in Business Management from Michigan State University.

Byron M. Green, 38, was appointed Vice President -- Engine/Foundry, replacing Coventry. He will report to Chow-Wah. Green joined the Chrysler Group in February 1998. Since then, he has held several positions throughout the company, most recently as Plant Manager of Jefferson North Assembly Plant. A replacement for Green at the Jefferson North plant will be named later. Green holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from GMI, and a Master's degree in Engineering Management from the University of Detroit.

June 7, 2002: McGraw glass plant to be closed?

Workers at Chrysler's McGraw glass plant note that windshields they once made are being outsourced, and that money is not being invested in the plant. The plant currently employes 1,200, and is likely to be closed if these reports are true.

June 7, 2002: DCX creates new unit to individualize brands

A reliable insider informs us that DCX has created a group to assure that all cars and trucks, including Freightliner, Mitsubishi, Mercedes, Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep, keep their own "flavor." A small number of specialists, responsible to the corporate supervisory board in Germany, will cover not just suspensions or exteriors, but the entire vehicle and all of its components.

June 7, 2002: Turbo PT to be built in July - manual in October

Mr. Source tells us that the turbocharged PT Cruiser will be built starting July 7, 2002, with automatic transmissions only. The manual-transmission version, which will most likely have faster acceleration and better gas mileage, will be produced starting October 10, 2002. /rant mode on/ This decision will no doubt hurt the publicity for the turbo PT, since acceleration times will be hindered by the slushbox. Producing the manual first would make for more favorable coverage by the automotive press, even though most buyers will probably opt for the automatic. Most people do not consider the transmission when comparing 0-60 times...but we're glad it's going into production soon. /rant mode off/

June 7, 2002: Upcoming Dodges

Back in February, Automotive News noted Dodge's plans to introduce a sport-utility smaller than the Dodge Durango, within the next two years (which would seem to indicate something based on the Mitsubishi lineup or the Jeep Liberty).

June 7, 2002: Selected Dodge dealers to sell Sprinter

According to Automotive News, 90 Dodge dealers will be chosen to sell Mercedes vans (possibly under the Freightliner name). These vans may be the Mercedes Vito as opposed to the Sprinter currently sold by Freightliner. They would prominently feature the legend "Powered by Mercedes" and use a Mercedes diesel engine.

Automotive News pointed out that Dodge's current van market share is about 16 percent, higher than any foreign competitor but lower than GM or Ford.

Note that this is not new news but may still be news to many readers.
