March 14, 2002: Neon compared to Civic

Corolland.com has added the Civic to its Corolla-vs-Neon comparison. While the Neon doesn't exactly trounce the Corolla in the comparison, so far - with Corolla acceleration figures still not in, and gas mileage quite high - the Neon does seem to have the edge over the Civic. See for yourself.

March 13, 2002: Just-Auto on Consumer Reports findings

Just-Auto.com reported on the Consumer Reports reliability survey [click here for our notes], noting that Chrysler was the best among domestic brands, with 22 problems per 100 vehicles, followed closely by GM and less closely by Ford (26). The "most reliable" American vehicle was the 300M. The best makers overall were Toyota and Subaru, Toyota having 12 problems were 100 vehicles. The worst vehicles were the Audi A6 2.7 turbo and the Ford Explorer Sport Trac. (Note that we are reporting on the Just-Auto survey and therefore believe we are exempt from the easily-threatened Consumer Reports lawsuits. We sure appreciate the Consumer Reports "we like to threaten you with lawsuits" attitude.)

March 10, 2002: VW strong-arms Virtual Works

Visit http://www.vwx.com/ for some sobering information on how fragile our Internet is in the face of large corporations - and apparently how easily justice can be purchased, even (or especially) by foreign companies. In this case, Volkswagen decided that vw.net infringed on its copyright, even though vw.net was Virtual Works' network and not a sales site, and in no way connected to auto sales.

March 10, 2002: Styling leaders change

(Chrysler press release) Chrysler today announced that Freeman Thomas has been named Head -- Pacifica Advance Product Design Center in Carlsbad, Calif., and that Tom Tremont has been appointed Vice President - Advance Product Design Strategy, based in Auburn Hills, Mich. and reporting to Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President - Design.

Freeman Thomas' move from Auburn Hills back to his native California will streamline communications between the corporation's centralized Product Design Operations, its satellite design center in California and creative support suppliers. Thomas, 44, joined the Chrysler Group in 1999 and spent nearly three years heading up Advance Product Design.

After spending 17 years at the Pacifica Advance Product Design Center, Tom Tremont, 53, will move to Auburn Hills to oversee Chrysler Group's Advance Product Design Strategy in the position of Vice President.

Under Tremont's direction, the Pacifica Advance Product Design Center evolved into Chrysler Group's highly lauded design "skunk works". This studio created design trends such as Cab Forward and Passenger Priority.

March 10, 2002: Ford fires (yet again)

Arizona's attorney general has asked Ford to look into recalling Crown Victoria/Police Interceptors because they seem vulnerable to fire after rear end collisions. The attorney general indicated two deaths could be linked to the design. NHTSA already has an investigation open into the three siblings - Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car - because "the fuel tank can rupture following a high-energy rear collision resulting in severe fires."

March 7, 2002: More parts sharing at DCX

Detroit News reported that Chrysler COO Wolfgang Bernhard said DCX's various brands will share more parts in the future. For example, computer software will be common across all Chrysler and Mercedes models. Other executives, according to the Detroit News, said that Freightliner, Chrysler, Mercedes, and Mitsubishi will have many more common parts starting in 2004, in order to cut costs by an estimated 4-6%.

March 6, 2002: Neon vs Corolla

Corolland has an interesting Neon - vs - Corolla comparison on their specs page. Click here to visit. (They have a similar comparison on their 2003 Camry page.)

March 6, 2002: Interesting Windows XP analogy

Jim Cullinan, Microsoft Windows XP lead product manager, said that the forthcoming Windows XP update "will be similar to putting a new coat of wax on your brand-new car." Does that mean it will be bad for the Windows XP finish? Most of us know you don't wax a brand-new car...right? (We could also add that wax doesn't usually add all sorts of features and commercials to the car.)

March 6, 2002: Car and Driver picks Ram

Chris wrote: "[they] finally stopped [complaining] about the motor and evaluated the whole truck. The Ram was tops in comfort, handling, and value. Second in fit and finish (a Dodge!), features, and off roading. Engines tied Ford. Toyota Tundra managed only a third due to its cramped interior and that not everybody likes the 'Baja-style ride' of its off-road package."
