March 1, 2002: Chrysler sales down yet again

Chrysler sales plunged about 11 percent in January compared with last year - a showing similar to that of Ford, though Chrysler has had much better quality in recent times. Genciu wrote: "For everyone worrying about the new Ram pickup sales; they are up 19% from last year 27,156 to 32,253! Neon was up 20%; but when you factor in lost Plymouth Neon sales, total Neon sales are down.

"The bad news: everything else is down from last year.

"But, from last month, the PT Cruiser is up 57%, minivans are up 39%, Grand Cherokee is up 35% and Durango is up 28%. "

March 1, 2002: GM up a little, Ford down a bit

GM's sales appear to have increased a little in January (compared to the prior year), though incentives have gone up as well. The main increase was in trucks. Ford, on the other hand, saw sales decline by more than 11 percent. Chrysler has not yet checked in. More details later.

March 1, 2002: VW recalls

Volkswagen is recalling Golf, Jetta, and New Beetle (as well as the Bora outside the US) models made between March and July 2001 for potential braking failure.

March 1, 2002: Jeep doesn't get injunction

The Chevy Yukon will soon be available with a Jeep grille and a Hummer name-badge, thanks to a Federal judge who decided that Jeep's trademark 7-slot grille can also be used by GM, which will be selling the "Hummer H2" (based on the Yukon, but selling for $50,000). A federal judge refused to grant an injunction against GM, saying that Chrysler waited far too long to bring suit, and should have done it back when the original Hummer was introduced. The judge also stated nobody would be confused by a GM which looks just like a Jeep, and that the availability of another vehicle with Jeep styling and a Jeep grille would not cause irreparable harm to Jeep. However, the case will still go to court.

February 27, 2002: Ford closes Dagenham, microcars finally arrive

Ford is closing most of its Dagenham plant, ending the illusion for British buyers that Ford is a domestic brand and possibly impacting on future sales in that country. The plant will now make diesel engines instead.

Meanwhile, the popular Nissan Micra is said to be making its way to the United States, heating up the low-cost car segment with the kind of vehicles popular every in the world except the US. The vehicle will do battle with the Toyota Echo and other vehicles in the $10,000-and-below range. Chrysler had originally planned a vehicle in roughly this segment (hence the joint venture with Rover for small engines, one of which is making its way into the BMW Mini).

February 27, 2002: SXT notes

Now that the SXT version of (apparently) each Dodge model has been publicized, it's time to point out Rich Hutchinson's remarks on the new trim line (written 33 days ago):

"Anybody heard of the new SXT? Really, it isn't much..it kinda fits in where the old Expresso did. But...based on the PR blurb I read it seems they're using the new trim line to advertise the Neon as a (gasp!) *fun* car.

"Gee marketing, welcome to the party. Where ya been all these years? Using the R/T to push rear seat room apparently. [Yes, that is what they were doing.]

"But hey, like the SRT...better late than never. At least they're trying to get something out of the car rather than let it languish until the next car comes out."
