Behr America, Inc., based in Troy, Michigan, will buy Chrysler's Dayton Thermal Products (DTP) component operation in Dayton, Ohio. This may be good news for the plant, which will produce a greater variety of products. The plant now makes climate control modules (including air conditioning components), engine cooling modules, vapour canisters, PCV valves and service parts for a wide variety of Chrysler models.
Rather than shore up the image of the PT Cruiser through new advertising and marketing, Chrysler has chosen the easy way out and cheapened the vehicle with $1,000 rebates in the Midwest and Northeast. The company is planning a campaign emphasizing the Cruiser's low $16,000 price...though whether they will hit on comfort, handling, and utility, we don't know.

Jeep is re-using the Renegade moniker on a new Liberty which will include an "integrated activity light bar," "bolted-on" wheel flares, removable side steps, unique wheels and a two-tone front fascia. The activity light bar houses four halogen lamps with 150,000 candlepower. Trapezoidal wheel openings frame all-terrain tires mounted on 16-inch six-spoke aluminum wheels. Wheels are color keyed with the Bright Cactus Green exterior or painted graphite with Light Khaki and Bright Silver vehicles. Protective silver tubular side steps with black step pads bolt to Liberty Renegade's uniframe rails for easy ingress and egress. Side steps are easily removable for extreme off-road driving.
The interior of the Jeep Liberty Renegade features well-tailored, supportive front seats with a unique combination of flat woven cloth and leather. These high back seats include seat back map pockets for added storage. Genuine brushed aluminum highlights on the instrument panel add a modern, machined look to the interior consistent with the exterior theme.
Renegade models will be available in both two- and four-wheel drive.
Sold under the name Jeep Cherokee Renegade, an international version of this vehicle will be available for the 2003 model year in countries around the world. Jeep Cherokee Renegade will be available with the 3.7-liter PowerTech V-6 and an automatic transmission or the 2.5-liter CRD diesel engine and a manual transmission.
Chrysler wrote: "Jeep Liberty exceeds industry-leading quality production targets and is being built at the state-of-the-art Toledo (Ohio) North manufacturing facility. As the Chrysler Group's newest assembly plant, the Toledo North Assembly Plant represents the culmination of best practices from the company's worldwide operations for lean, flexible, high-quality production."
On a side note, we found the Liberty to be the head of its class in our review. It has the ride and comfort of an on-roader, with the off-road ability of a Jeep.
Dodge brought out the new heavy-duty Ram, complete with Hemi and Cummins turbodiesel engines, yesterday. Click here for the full story.
With the power of the 4-liter straight six, the Apex option package builds on the demand for Wranglers with premium content.
The heavy-duty 2003 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 pickup will be unveiled at long last at the Chicago auto show, along with, possibly, a new SUV, according to Automotive News. GM is expected to grab the headlines with new concept cars including a Saturn roadster and a new Pontiac direction, while Ford will signal Mercury's comeback with the first head of styling for the brand.
Perhaps realizing that its current pickups were quickly and easily outclassed by General Motors, and soon will be eclipsed by Chrysler as well, Ford has decided to redesign the series again. No word on when we can expect the vehicles since the sign-off just took place - figure at least two years, more likely four before the next F-150 is set. Just-auto quoted Forbes columnist Jerry Flint as saying that, in terms of base pickups, Chevy outsells Ford (465,000 Silverado 1500s to 346,000 F-150s), with Chrysler not too far behind (250,000 Ram 1500s) - Ford's main advantage is in heavy-duty rigs. Perhaps Chrysler will reach up there soon.
Eager to prevent a Senate plan to boost gas mileage and eliminate the "heavy duty commuter car" loophole (which allows Yukons and other huge SUVs to be exempted from gas mileage standards), President Bush has proposed a plan to base standards on weight instead of gas mileage. This plan would be detailed next year. Many have suggested that the White House is simply trying to delay action, now that Congress and government agencies are ready to close loopholes in the law. Meanwhile, imports dominated domestic manufacturers in car sales this past month, while building new plants to gain more of the SUV and truck market.
