For 1984 models, code 44 indicates a problem with the logic module’s self diagnostics. When code 44 is triggered the power limited light will not be lit and the system will not enter limp mode.
For 1985 – 1987 models, the battery temperature sensor voltage is out of range (below .04 volts or over 4.96 volts). The power limited light will not be lit and the system will set the charging voltage to 14v. Normal voltage output should be around 2.5v at 77 degrees.
For 1988 and later models a code 44 indicates no signal voltage at FJ2 at the logic module. When code 44 is triggered the power limited light will not be lit.
Poor wiring or connection - Read the page ‘How to troubleshoot drivability issues’. Check the wiring and connections from the logic module to the power module. Clean and re-grease the connectors with dielectric grease.
Defective logic module – The logic module should be replaced.
Poor wiring or connection – See above: Also, look at the connections at the power module or SEMC and verify good wiring. When the ignition switch is on the voltage at the battery temperature pin should be about 2.5v at 77 degrees.
Defective battery temperature sensor – The battery temperature sensor is located inside the power module. To verify that the sensor is working properly, check the resistance of the sensor through the power module's pin and ground. The measurement should be about 10,000 ohms at 77°F. While it is possible to solder in a replacement, it is more likely that the entire module must be replaced.
Poor wiring or connection – See above: Also, check the wiring and connections between the SMEC and the ignition key as well as the fusible links by the battery. Find the J2 wiring splice in your vehicle by using the splice locations by referencing the wiring diagrams manual. Check to be sure there is power to the module from the splice with the ignition on.
Defective SMEC – If the connections and fusible links are good and code 44 is still present the fuse inside the SMEC is blown. If this is the case there is probably a short inside the SMEC and it should be replaced.
