To get the codes, cycle the ignition key On - Off - On - Off - On within 5 seconds. The odometer will show the P-code. If there are no codes, "Done" will appear. A code P1684 shows that the memory has been cleared recently and is not necessarily a problem. More instructions and other code lists.

On this page, MAF = mass airflow, MAP = manifold absolute pressure. Few Chrysler vehicles use an MAF. MAP sensors have a tendency to fail without setting codes.

    • Rich pointed out that possibilities include a dead or badly installed camshaft position sensor; valve timing out of spec; sensor relearning required with a scan tool; or a damaged tone wheel or pulse ring. ImperialCrown wrote that the cam position is used mainly to synchronize fuel injectors, the crank position is needed to know when to spark. A good scan tool can usually pick up the problem by monitoring the sensors; a bad one will sometimes get "lost." Timing chain and water pump sensors can cause the code to be set (if timing marks are out of range). The 2.4 engine was known for going through cam sensors for a while (see cam sensor replacement steps)

  • P1700 - Transmission Control Module (TCM) problem - this means there is a proprietary code stuck in there, set by the transmission computer; it could mean a bad sensor. This can only be diagnosed by Chrysler-specific tools, which some shops outside dealers do have.

    • Al Steier wrote that P1740 is a Chrysler-only code. On RE transmissions, the computer was looking for a drop in engine speed after the overdrive solenoid or torque converter clutch were applied; since lockup comes in fourth gear, it doesn't know whether the rpm drop is due to moving to overdrive or locking the torque converter. If a truck shows P1740 is probably has one of two problems: a bad overdrive or torque converter solenoid, or bad torque converter material so that the torque converter clutch cannot hold lockup.
