1989 Daytona ES Ext Locks Ext Door Handle no longer opens Rate Topic: -----

Have a mint 1989 Dodge Daytona with less the 60K miles
that was in storage for a 'few' years. Pumped every yr
till 06, had to replace fuel injector. Headliner dropped one
hot day during a photo op. Go figure.

Bumper play with a crane took out my 1999 Ply Voyager
off the road. Cracked the back with it.

Anyways, dust and cobwebs aside, she purrs like a kitten.
Four months snaking the road, my passenger door handle
no longer opens the door from the outside. Opens inside
ok. Any idea if I can fix, our is my old lady handi-ed?

Anybody interested in seeing pix give a hola.

2nd car, mom bought me new in 89.
In storage since 4/07.... Pic of last insp stick to prove.

White ext, marroon interior.
Snowflakes with new skins.
Auto with 2.5l 4cyl.

1st off, welcome to the forum. Here is an elite group of peeps that have years of extensive knowledge and are great people. You should find an answer for just about anything. Again welcome!

Get an alan wrench. From the doors edge towards the middle you will see an oval hole that's at an angle. use a flash light to see the alan head on the bolt. Loosen the bolt a little, adjust it and try the door again.

Other two options could be, the bar is bent and you'll need to re-bend it to catch, or the clip that holds the bar inside to the handle is broken and the bar has fallen out of the handle. You can buy these clips in the self help at parts stores for about a buck or so.

+1 to solo, I would say the linkage has fell off

Just remove the inner door panel, takes no time at all. And take a look.

I agree with above.
In my case we had to remove the outer door handle, then remove the thin bar/linkage and
WACK IT !! a few times with a hammer to straighten it out some.
Hadn't had any problems sience. :P

If the handle pulls normally, but doesn't seem to actuate anything, I'd bet on the Allen screw adjustment. Happened to me. Now I have it set up so a very easy pull drops the door open. No need to remove the trim panel.

I will give the allen key fix a try and pull off the panel if that doesn't work.

Fixed it!

The allen key adjustment fixed it.

BUT I still took the panel off to look if the bar was bent.
While doing the adjust, I looked at the handle height.
Turns out the 'black' handle assembly moved up somehow.

The two bolts on the rear of the handle assm were mightly
loose. Seems they used a two sided tape to center the
bracket holds the handle.

Dunno if that tape is not sticking. I loosed the bolts
and moved the entire 'black' assembly down.

Nice.

TJ, very nice work on that restoration.

How do those side louvers stay on? Two sided tape?

Nice having Ts, my 84 Z28 had em. Only non-MOPAR I had.

Maybe I'll catch you on the line at NJTP11 Shore-bound...

Now that I think about it, those two studs and nuts that hold the handle assembly on my car had loosened to the point where the handle almost fell off.

I'll be 47 in April. Bob O' has a few years on me. We middle-aged people are the majority of those working on Daytonas, I think. Not nearly as many in their 20s, like we were when we bought them new. I've had Daytonas for 22 years.

I'm 32 and I've had 3... none new though.

But although I've worked on them for years, I wouldn't say that I was restoring them... just trying to keep them on the road.

My "new" car is going to get babied though.

I bought my first Daytona New in Aug of 87 there was evan a new 88 next to it at the dealer.
I got a better price on a left over evan though it only had 8 miles on it and the plastic still on the seats.
so then I had that car from 87 to 93 then didn't have another Daytona till 2004 and sience then now I am
on my 5th Daytona and I also still have my 4th so thats a total of 15 years working on Daytonas
