Steering noise when cold - '05 Touring Edition Rate Topic: -----

If you were a registered user, you would not be seeing this!

When I start up my Cruiser (cold) there is a sound in the front of the car, a whirring or buzzing sound and a sound when turning the wheel shortly after start up. The noise only lasts a second or so. After a minute or so the steeting is fine. I've had it to a dealer twice (it had 32K miles) and they could not identify a problem, saying in effect that it would have to get worse before they could diagnose the problem.

It ain't right and I'd like it fixed before it goes out of warranty.

The PS fluid level is ok. I know there was a recall...

Campaign Number: 04V268000 Date: 2004-Jun-03
Component: Steering: Hydraulic Power Assist: Hose, Piping, And Connections
Defect Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.4L NON-TURBOCHARGED ENGINES AND AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLES, THE POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE MAY CONTACT THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE DIFFERENTIAL COVER, POTENTIALLY DAMAGING THE HOSE.
Consequence Summary: POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN AN UNDERHOOD FIRE.
Corrective Summary: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND RELOCATE, OR REPLACE AS NECESSARY, THE POWER STEERING HOSE AND CONFIRM TORQUE OF THE HOSE FASTENER AT THE STEERING GEAR END. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

...but I don't think this is the problem, but what do I know?

Any ideas?

My '05 TE makes a similar noise. Only when cold, near freezing or below and only within the couple minutes of start up. Makes the noise parked and when driving. The number of times it makes the noise seems to correlate to how cold it is outside. Above 40 degress I haven't noticed the noise. Car has been at the dealer for over a week. They say they can't get it to make the noise. In their defense, it has only been down to the mid 30s outside and probably over 40 degrees by the time they look at the car. It may be a coincidence, but the noise started right after they replaced one of the axle half shafts.

The vans had a similar problem. Mine did it with the fluid level well within the normal range, but when I filled it all the way, the noise stopped. I later had the fluid changed, and the problem never recurred.

Thank you both for your replies. Your problem sounds a lot like mine. I will add fluid and see if that helps.

Picked up the cruiser up from the dealership last night. This morning it made a slight noise right after start up and another noise, after driving a couple hundred yards, that sounded like the horn of a small car, but muffled. Noise lasted about 1/4 of a second. Everything was fine after that. I haven't checked the power steering fluid yet, but will this evening.

Your description describes my Cruiser's noises exactly.

Checked my power steering fluid and it was a little low. Filled to the high mark for hot. This morning was the first morning since I filled the PS reservoir that it was close to freezing. Car made no unusual noises. Don't understand how an ounce or two could make a difference, but so far so good.
