This is a weird one, its just that it got late and dark out in the parking lot where I have been doing a transmission replacement so Im tired and dont have the energy to investigate.....however....
1995 dodge caravan, 3.0 3 speed auto
My Brother who is a mechanic by trade (although a state away) had a good tranny sitting in his shop and he gave it to me. He also gave me the drive axles, in case they were in better shape than the ones I had. He confirmed with me the year, and that it was in fact a three speed. (This trans is from this generation, although Im not sure of the year, it seemed identical so far)
He also said that in case the tranny was a little different, i may have to use the axles that he gave me for it to work out.
In any case, my plan was to pick the better of the axles to use. The long side units were exactly the same length so I just picked the one with the better boots. When it came tiem for the short side, I could only locate one of them and it looked fine so I out it in. It was kind of hard to wrestle it into place (the long one went in much easier). I had the two big bolts out of the shock and the tie rod popped out. (lower knuckle was undisturbed)
Anyway, paranoid that I am, Im a little worried about how hard it was to get the short axle in, and it seems that the wheel on that side is out of alignment somewhat.
I really dont know if I put the short axle in from my brother or the one that had been in the van. (or that it would even matter) I am really scratching my head as to where my other axle went. They were on my porch....and the other set was in my van.
I know there were several manufacturers for the axles/cv joints, but all else being equal I think it would not matter as long as you used the entire unit...
Should I assume that since the tranny was indentical and the long axles were exactly the same length that the short axles would probably have been the same as well?
