If you were a registered user, you would not be seeing this!

I have a 1989 Dodge Caravan LE 3.3 L with the A 604 Ultradrive Transaxle. The problem I am having is, The Transaxle lags about 2 seconds when placing it in drive. The more pressing problem is when the vehicle is at operating Temprature and the outside temprature is above 70 Degrees, When placing the vehicle in Drive, the transaxle sometimes lags up to 30 seconds before going into gear. (sometimes it will not go in at all). and when it does this it will only operate in low (1st) gear. ie: run into the store leaving the van running, when restarting it this condition exists. Have to let it cool down sometimes up to 1 hour. It works normaly then, and when it is cool. I’m looking for a fix that does not include a R&R. Anyone got any ideas?

If it's not engaging in gear it's not an electrical problem. It's low fluid, low fluid pressure, internal damage like a leaky pump or bad seals.

About the only hope is that fresh ATF+4 and a new filter helps. Otherwise you are looking at internal repairs. Pulling the error codes would help see what the problem is. A dealer or some shops with the proper scanner can pull the codes.

Sometimes as a last resort before a rebuild Lucas tranny fix can help. It won't fix the tranny but could delay a rebuild.
