If you were a registered user, you would not be seeing this!

We have a 1996 Town & Country with the 3.8L motor and overdrive trannsmision that went bad and can't be rebuilt, I have found a relatively cheap tranny but it's from a 3.3L '99 caravan with 80,000 miles, my question is, will the tranny itself fit and match the sensors/wiring in our 3.8 Town & Country? if not can it be somehow altered to fit and work in it? I have been told it will work but I need to be re-assured before I make the purchase and a new or rebult tranny it's out of my budget at the moment, also I've been told (when inquiring about used trannies) that there was more than one tranny built in '96? our minivan may be an early '96, I have to check the sticker in the door jam to be sure.

Thank you in advance.

Paul.

It all depends on what you mean by "work."

Phisically it will bolt in. The final drive is a different ratio so your shift points will be different and the speedometer and related electronics will not read correctly without reprogramming the TCM.

The other possible problem is whether you have an early or late trans. During 96 there was a change in the PRNDL switch. The early had a PRNDL switch and a back up light switch lower on the trans and the late had a combination switch next to where the shift rod comes out of the trans.

You could change the wiring and plugs if you have the early trans.

Ok Thanks for the reply, do you know what's the date when the early tranny was last used? if I have a late '96 tranny could the back up light switch be exhcahnged/replaced with the combination switch? or won't this work?
Thanks.

6/5/95 was the last date for the old style PRNDL switch, from 6/6/95 onward used the new TRS (transmission range sensor).
