Engine help!?! I might be in MAJOR Trouble! Rate Topic: -----

Being the kind of person who does before they think... I sat my my freshly self ported intake manifold on the engine, forgetting to do a final clean. I pulled it back off to lay on the gasket and saw little pile of aluminum shavings on the top of the block next to the push rods. I cleaned most of it up but will anything happen with the shavings being the soft aluminum? They are very very small fragments. Please, anything will help.

I am also slightly concerned about my carb, I turned it half-way upside down to get it out of the bag with one hand and i heard something ratteling on the sides. Is something just opening and closing, or did something fall off?

Let me share with you my tail of woe and then 'suggest' a plan of attack.

I had my dad glass blast a manifold. The outside was clean and the inside was blown out but.....

I installed it on a 440 and tried to crank it up. Needless to say we had to pull the engine apart to re-ring it. The glass got in everywhere and tore up the insides of the enigne.

Now to your trouble.....

It seems that if you haven't cranked it up and if you're sure that none got in the crank case here's what I suggest.

Use some liquid like thin oil mixed with mineral spirits or something like that and clean everything. I say this because you can vacuum it up and with some luck get all of it out.

But if you really want to be on the safe side drop the pan, pull the pistons and clean EVERYTHING with both liquid solvant and air to insure that there are no tiny bits anywhere that can muck up the works.

Since you haven't fired it up, you can do as Bob suggested with the oil and then use a shop vac. Or just use the shop vac and then take a very bright light to see if any particles remain. Keep in mind that it doesn't take a very large particle to lock up an oil pump.

I think you should take it to a professional who actually knows what theyre doing because i don't think you should take the chance of messing it up even more...Id like to know how it turns out so let us know

The rattling sound is the floats. Good, they are not hung up.

Get yourself a bright flashlight and at a dark time and look the engine over real well.
It doesn't sound like anything went into the engine, " - and saw little pile of aluminum shavings on the top of the block next to the push rods." Again, just check it over real well. Did any bits go down the oil drain back holes?

I would use a vacuum - then paint thinner (or similar solvent - brake parts cleaner) if particles are found clinging with oil. DON"T VACUUM THE SOLVENTS! Plug the drain back holes with paper towels. Then wipe out any particles. Just make sure nothing goes down the oil drain holes.
