I have a 1998 dodge dakota,3.9 v-6,5 speed,2wd, and i wanted some input on what brands of parts to use for a tune up. I am looking to upgrade from the cheap parts store stuff. I was thinking of the accell supertune kit from summit along with a hotter coil. Is going this route worth it or am i just wasting money? I'm not so much looking for performance, but better mileage. So far the truck gets 20mpg with mixed city and highway driving.

Your gas mileage is about as good as it gets - maybe 22-23 mpg highway.

Accel coil and all that crap does nothing for a stock engine.

Make sure not to use dist caps with aluminum contacts. They oxidize heavily into a white residue that will cause rough running. NAPA has the Echlin brand cap and rotor with brass contacts. And they carry Belden spark plug wires, which were OEM at one time. I use these, and stock Champion plugs. With my 4 x 4 club cab and cap, I get 20-22 mpg highway.

Keep your tires well inflated. You really do lose 1 mpg for each psi under.

If it's time, MoPar parts offers a 'value line' tune up kit that is competitively priced with the aftermarket. I go 38# front, 35# rear for tires. Drive light and gentle.

That's how i drive. The truck seldom is over 2,000 rpm. After the tune up i need to put shocks all around. Any suggestions? I drive alot of county roads and i am thinking about the ranchro 5000 shock.

Gabriels rusted out and crumbled in my car after only 4 years. Monroes are good, and my brother had put a Carquest brand heavy-duty shock in the truck when he sold it to me. Ride is fantastic, loaded or empty.
