Strange indeed. They really shouldn't do that, though. It was also never noticeable on our Neon or 300M...or my old Sundances or Spirit R/T.

Unless you drive alot at night Dave, chances are you wouldn't even notice it. I delivered pizza's for 17yrs at night, trust me, they(chrysler products) all do it to some extent. Might not do it all the time, but there are times it will do it more and you will notice it. I have had Chrysler Products, Mitsubishi, Ford and Volkswagon. The only ones that didn't do it were the VW's.

I wonder ifi the degree if the fluctuation is the same...if they flickered, they didn't do it as noticeably as in the PT...! Had the Neon for a good ten years.

I think it really is more noticable on the PT's, but that might be because the alternator is a much higher output than the Neons have.

I own a 2002 PT Cruiser limited edition. I have noticed that the light flickering is most noticeable when it gets really cold at night. The most obvious reason would be the battery. This is the one major thing that is affected by temperature. When it gets cold the cranking power of the battery drops dramatically. Since I have a cheap battery in my car the change in cranking power and flashing lights increases drastically. Having a more expensive battery will help insure better cranking and smooth out the voltage fluctuation due to the battery loosing power in colder temps. But minor light flickering can be seen in majority of cars because of the alternator cycling on and off to keep the supply of power constant as the car is running. Not like some of the cars in the early years that used generators which made it possible to run the car without a battery in the car. I also have a 2001 VW jetta with a turbo diesel. This car is really picky on the quality of the battery. A cheap battery it won’t run and as the original battery was getting slightly old all the lights would almost shut off when turning the wheel. I replaced the battery and the car runs fine. I took the old battery and placed it in a gas car and it fires up quick and fast and temp never affects it. Also I have been in a Chevrolet Silverado SS pickup which is twice the cost of a new loaded PT cruiser, it also has a slight light flashing problem when it is cold. So if you can't live with the flashing of the lights during the cold winter months I would check to see if you have a good quality battery and that your terminals are clean. Other then that if you can live with it once the car warms up and the battery gets warmer the flashing isn’t as noticeable.

It seems REALLY noticeable in wet weather which would also be an issue. Hmmm.

I have an '05 Convertible and have the same problem. It's very distracting so I took it to the Dealership. They put it on the scope and couldn't find anything wrong. Guess I just have to live with it!

It does seem to have toned itself down for some reason... I think nexst year at about this time I'll preventive-style replace the battery. (It's a 2003.) OTOH my Neon battery lasted about eight years.

No ..... it does not matter if I move the steering wheel or not .... if I reach into the car say ... in the morning when it is now dark and put the key in and not even sit in the car and just turn the key ...... once the car is started ..... I have flicker .. and I can really see it in the interior lites against the black outside ..... then when I'm driving in the dark ... I see a faint flicker on my headlites ....... It almost gives me stigmatism for a brief second ...."U know"I thought one of the Diodes was leaking in the Alternator to cause the ac ripple but they changed the Alternator (so they say) The parts guy at one of the Chrysler dearlerships has a PT like mine and his flickers too ..... he says ..." ya I know it does that .... but it doesn't bother me " It is wierd as some have it and some don't .
Thanks deedee

I have the exact same problem as DeeDee... I can be sitting in the garage and watching the lights and there is an intermeiitent flicker, sometime worse than other times on my 2002 standard

Do you think that could go hand in hand with the idle issues Ive been hearing about, I havent noticed any light flicker, but at an idle when the car is warmed up, it has a weird rough spot that doesnt reflect in the tach
I'm sending the car into the dealer to get two of the weatherstrip seals replaced, and I'll have them check out my stumble too

I have a 2006 that is in the shop now with flickering lights, air conditioning that does not put out much cold air, the radio will occasionally pop and not be usable until the car is parked and restarted, and lately the poping sound also results in the engine dying. It can be restarted, but it is unnerving.

Back in the days before computers, we had ammeters with needles that flickered just like the lights on the PT Cruiser. Same pattern that is. I suspect the voltage regulator is causing the alternator to kick in and out. Back in the old days, alternators had capacitors to smooth the electrical systems. Whe the dealer gives the car back and has not fixed it, I may try installing a capacitor between the battery terminals to see if that helps. I fear that the voltage spikes lead to the computer giving problems.

I will also post this as a new one.

My 03 Neon is doing it now. 68k miles on it. Noticed it very slightly prior MUCH MUCH worse since this cold hit Ohio. It can really mess with your head at night.

Accelerating from a stop does it, braking does (but it doesnt seem to be dep. on the brak lights more so the solenoid pack), switching gears is making it do it on mine! I need a solution cuz its bad! Original battery read prior posts... Does swapping the bat work?
