Question:
I changed the coolant and/or had a coolant leak and fixed it. I filled the coolant with the radiator cap off and the engine running filling it as it went down but the car's temp gauge kept travelling up and I turned the car off before it overheated. I let it cool off and I tried it again and the same thing happened. What is going on and how do I fix it?
The Problem:
There is an IRON plug installed in the top of the waterbox (where the thermostat is installed) that you are supposed to remove when topping off the coolant system after draining it to burp the air out of the system. Well this is an IRON plug in an ALUMINUM head and after 12+ years of being hot and then cold and hot and cold and hot and cold they almost "weld" together. I have seen them removed - but it's maybe 1 in 20 from personal experience.
Answer 1 (The Simple Answer):
The easiest option is to remove the thermostat and drill a 1/16" hole in it towards the outer lip. You would then re-install the thermostat with this hole facing upwards. What this does is any air trapped inside the engine that would insulate the thermostat from the coolant and allow the engine to overheat before the thermostat opens to escape thru the little hole.
Many people will tell you to go with a 1/8" hole or even bigger or more than one hole but it it is not necessary. Any hole will bleed the air out from behind the thermostat - the bigger or the more holes that you have the more coolant you let by with the thermostat closed.
Answer 2 (Complicated Answer):
I have found this solution very good and that is to drill the plug out, tap the hole, and install a brass radiator drain cock in place of the old plug. I used some teflon tape to seal the threads and some J-B Weld to make sure it sealed and stays put.
I have used this valve MANY times to bleed air after doing work on the coolant system.
