1.8/2.0/and 2.4 World Engines Chain or Belt driven Cams? Rate Topic: -----

If you were a registered user, you would not be seeing this!

Does anyone know if these engines will have a chain or belt driven camshaft?

Having owned only 1 car with a belt driven cam (a 1993 Suzuki Swift GT that was very quick and reliable)...
I'm definitely in the market for the new Caliber to replace my aging Dakota, but I'm not crazy about having to replace a belt at 60.000 miles as part of "routine" maint.
Since the old Dak has 150,000 miles on it's clock and is still going strong with it's chain driven cam......I'm hoping the new Caliber has the same (not like most of todays belt driven cams).

I hope this isn't a redundant question, but even with all the great info given here at allpar.....I've not been able to find an answer to this question through research.

Thanks!

James

Ps. I can replace the Dakota with the Caliber since I sold my boat and have nothing to tow anymore.

All Engines have Timing Belts.
They recommend maintenance because the belts also drive the water pump and are Interference engines.

The world engines have chain-driven cams.

Finally!
A high tech engine with a chain instead of a belt.
Hopefully it will be as reliable an engine as my Dakotas trusty old 3.9 has been. Got 150,000 on the little beast and she still runs great, just some awful body damage that's not worth fixing at this point.

Struts and stuff..........What the heck you talking about? "all engines have timing belts"

Good to see Dodge isn't using one in this application, and it's one of the many reasons I've always stuck with them when I could afford to.

I'm having trouble finding stuff on google, but Borg-Warner supplies the chain drive setup for these engines. They also supply the timing chain setup for the 2.7, 3.7, and 4.7.

Plus, the Jeep area at NAIAS had a cutaway 2.4l world engine, and it clearly had chain-driven cams. As I understand it, chains are better when you have a VVT setup.
