If you were a registered user, you would not be seeing this!

I recently aquired two Daytonas. I am in a quandry over which to keep and which to sell. One is an '88 Shelby Z 2.2 TI auto trans, the other is a '89 ES 2.5 TI 5spd. I plan to make the one I keep a daily driver with around 300HP. So I am leaning toward the ES because of the 5spd. However I am concerned about the differences in the 2.2 and 2.5. The main difference I know of is the 2.5 has balance shaft where the 2.2 does not. Is there anything else I need to be concerned with? Also is there anything that really makes the Shelby special except for the word Shelby?

Welcome Friend!!!

I am not an expert on the 2.2 vs the 2.5 BUT I have included an attachment to someone who is. My BEST advice is to got to the Allpar website and start doing your research. The site is invaluable in both scope and content.

I have read the Allpar site, it's links and several other sites as well. I have a good understanding of what needs to be done to reach my goals. The question I have is what are the differences in the 2.2 and 2.5? Is one better than the other and why?

The 2.2L has a redline of 6500 RPM, whereas the 2.5L redlines at 6000.

my preferance is to keep the balance shafts, atleast on a street vehicle. i find the 2.5 to be more sophisticated, despit having more vibration from the throw of that long crank. the shafts make it smoother than a 2.2 w/out shafts. at cruising speed (3,000 rpm) you are using about 3 more hp....go figure!!! an 88+ roller cam, synthetic oil and doing the dodgegarage.com oil flow mods to the block and pickup will more than make up for the loss due to the shafts. who cares if the 2.2 rev's higher than the 2.5. peak hp on an 8 valve comes in at just below 5 grand anyway. who spends all day at 6 grand, even on a race track? i say the low end torque and response is waaaaaay more useful, especially in a heavier car. in a lighter car, it makes for a very peppy ride!!! (think ac cobra) if you yank the shafts, you HAVE to tap and plug the oil feed hole for them!
