HI everyone!

It's been a long time since I've been here! I'm back and back with a question!!!

I just took my PT into the dealer for it's 60.000 mile service. It actually only has 57 some odd thousand miles, but anyway, my question is, how long should the motor mounts last? I don't race my car and don't drive it hard at all. I take real good care of it and it is still pretty near new looking! In fact I've only driven it about 3 times since summer has started so it hasn't seen the road that much this summer.

I would think the motor mounts would last longer then 57000 miles!???

Anyone else had to have their motor mounts replaced this early????

Thanks for any help on this!!!

Kim

OH, and I think it's funny that everything that has gone wrong with my car has not been covered by that extended bumper to bumper warranty I bought. What an idiot for doing that! never again!!

Upper or lower mount? You would be very surprised to see how cheap and flimsy the rubber is in PT motor mounts. I haven't seen any go out that early before, especially when the car hasn't been abused at all.....Yeah, I think an extended warranty only covers parts that are lubricated like the engine and tranny.

Do you have a manual or automatic? Manuals will wear quicker, but not that soon! A lower mount can go prematurely if there is any type of oil leak or sludge buildup, as oil can attack rubber components.

I have an automatic.

Just picked the car up and even the service guy said that chrysler has some cheap mounts!!! They want 300 bucks to do it so my hubby, who works on cars for fun, is going to change them. We have been taking the car to the dealer for it's maintanence because we figured if anything went wrong "under waranty  " it would be coverded because they did all the work. Since this isn't covered, he'll do it!!

My hubby say's that VW has the same cheap design!! He used to work on vw's along time ago!!

Thanks for the reply's!!!

Thanks for the heads up, gives me one more item to look out for when I'm on my back. Glad your "hubby" can take care of it, $300 is a lot to waste!

Please let us know how your hubby progresses with the engine mount repair and which mount (upper or lower) has failed.

If he has any questions, this group may be able to help and there is also information in the PTCrew forum. (ptcrew.com)

$300! Should take about a 1/2-3/4 hour to change the top one, a lttle over an hour to change the bottom one. I can get a filled (polyurathane) motor mount, top or bottom, for $69 + shipping ea. at Deyeme Racing. They are much better than factory.

My 2004 PT GT Mounts have been replaced twice, I do very limited racing during the summer, mostly a daily driver. it has 41000 mi. I finally broke down and got the poly urethane inserts. I have an auto trans, so I do notice an increase in vibration at red lights, but better than constantly replacing factory mount. It made a big difference at the track also. Mounts or inserts from a SRT-4/ Neon will work on a PT. I got mine from Modern Performance

I am changing the timing belt on my PT Cruiser, (2.4 non turbo). I need to know what is the size of the torx bolt that joins the right side motor mount to the engine support bracket accessible thru the port in the right fender well. It appears to be about a T 52 or 53. Help please, this is a real nightmare of a repair.

My 01 LE had the lower mount fail. For $60 I replaced mine in less than 15 minutes. Simplest repair I ever done.

If you look at the part you can see why it failed, it lacks about 30 percent more rubber. Almost like the part is designed to fail IMHO.

they are bad for this on the neons too...and i actually broke the big bolt that goes through the side of wheelwell into the timing cover....not sure if you guys have this on your motor....but i broke that bolt(dont know how)...which made the motor drop down and ripped the top mount to shreds.

You are my hero. Jack the car up. Remove the tire. Take off the inner liner. Put a jack under the engine to keep it from moving. Remove the lower mount and then reverse procedure all in less than 15 minutes. Do you charge by the hour? ;)

Actually I put it on a lift, removed the plastic cover, removed the two bolts on each dogbone end and put the new part in, used a pry bar to line up the second hole, and "BAM!" just like Emeril, it was done!

When changing the torque struts the manual does call for aligning the engine. Hope you didn't move it too much. Lucky guy to have access to a lift. :P
