Oil Pan Replacement Rate Topic: -----

If you were a registered user, you would not be seeing this!

Okay, so I learned a very good lesson recently. When the blower motor goes, replace it ASAP... not wait two weeks. I ended up driving off the road the other day because I couldn't see through the windshield suddenly and tried to pull over. The problem there was where I pulled over ended up being a two foot drop into a rock lined ditch. The Daytona came through pretty good at first (actually corrected a small front end problem I thought would persist until I replaced the CVs), but a quarter mile later I started losing oil pressure. I quickly pulled off the road and found a fist sized hole in my oil pan where the plug should have been. Eeks!

The car is now sitting in my driveway (got it towed as when I jacked it up it hemorrhaged the remaining two quarts of oil out). I'm getting a new pan and gasket from Advanced Auto Parts, but I'm a little confused. Chilton shows the gasket as being a four piece affair requiring RTV around between the gaps, while the Advanced Auto Parts one appears to be one piece. Is this intended or should I just wing it and RTV the heck out of the pan edges before I bolt it up?

Before I forget, it's a 89 Dodge Daytona w/ 2.5L no Turbo (so sad).

There are two pan gaskets for the 2.2/2.5. The 4 piece which is actually two rubber pieces for the ends and cork for the flat areas. I stay away from this gasket big time. I prefer the one piece gasket which has two metal flat pieces molded with rubber to two rubber pieces for the ends. This one piece gasket is called a 'PermaDry' gasket and is provided by FelPro.

Is this the gasket you got?

Actually haven't picked up the part yet (was going to today), but I did see the PermaDry listed for only about $10 more, so will grab that, thanks.

Look at the one piece gasket they're offering you. It may already be the PermaDry. I know of no other one piece for our oil pans.

Well, I ended up getting the 4 piece perma dry, however, the Daytona has passed on.

Upon removing the oil pan, we found the oil pump bashed, pickup tube crushed, supplemental chain torn away, the oil pump drive gear gone, etc. To top it all off, while I was inside calling various junkyards for the parts, somebody started it up... within a few seconds it was pouring black then white smoke.

RIP '89 Daytona.

Are you going to rebuilt the engine or get a replacement? I have a 2.5 TBI engine under my bench at home.

Not going to bother at this point. As much as I would of loved to restore this car, adding an engine rebuild/swap to the list of things it needs far exceeds the amount of time and money I have. I can't even get back to the car where it is being stored currently until Sunday to pretty much strip it of any resellable parts (I do have a local parts guy willing to buy anything in decent condition... which should be everything except the engine ;)). With that, I'll see if I can buy another pre-90 car to work on but I may need to settle for a beater just to get me from A to B (but now I've exceeded the scope of this forum, after all, this is a Dodge site ;)).

Thank you for the offer though.
