2.5 common block turbo conversion '86 parts on a 95? Rate Topic: -----

If you were a registered user, you would not be seeing this!

I have an '86 G body with a T1 and a scored cylinder wall, and a '95 spirit with a good motor (2.5, common block I believe), but bad everything else. Would it be possible to pull the shortblock out of the spirit, attatch the head, electronics, etc from the Laser car, and mount it to the Laser's tranny? (even if I have to buy some stuff)

Thanks in advance for any responses.

edit: both are AT trans

you'd need to drill the oil return in the back of the block, the rods are weaker, the compression is higher, and it will run lean on the stock computer. if you dont run it hard it may be ok but this is an iffy swap if you just drop it in and run it. you CAN just bolt it right in and fire it up and drive off, except for the oil return for the turbo, but it will not run right and may not be durable.

You'll be able to see most of the mechanical differences with both blocks sitting on the floor of your shop. The oil return line is the biggie. There have been several guys that have done something similar to what you're proposing. The key is to keep boost low. No more than 7 psi. With the low boost, the higher compression isn't such an issue, and the connecting rods will hold up just fine. Keep the G electronics, but you might have to back the timing off 4 or 5 degrees to prevent detonation. Again, if you can get past the oil drain, everything else is direct bolt-up from the old engine. Drop and go!

I think we can do the return, so that should be fine. :) I don't have the 2.2 block anymore, but I think I can find what needs to be changed. Spirit accessories or Laser?

Also, I was thinking about getting new pistons/rods while the engine was out to help with the durability and compression...good idea or no?

Use the accessories from the car the engine will be going into. If you don't mind spending the money, go for the turbo pistons and rods in the 2.5. You can find them used on TurboDodge.com and Turbo-Mopar.com, and now Allpar has a Parts Wanted section so you can ask for them there.

long as your t1 isn't a 2.5 it will work
cause pre common block the 2.5's were a taller block

well the common block doesnt change the way anything mounts, since hes not carb he doesnt need a mechanical fuel pump or anything, and ive had tall block and common block 2.5 in the same car on at least 2 cars.
