I am about to attempt my first ever turbocharger overhaul, 1984 T-1, bad oil leak, looks like from the vicinity of the oil drain fitting, Does anybody have any advice or tips on what to look out for?

Actually your best bet is to send it to TurbosUnleashed(.com) Ask Chris to overhaul it for you and be sure to get his oil and coolant lines. These are larger than stock and do a better job of cooling and lubricating the turbo.
The risk involved in rebuilding it yourself is the turbine getting out of balance.
