The Internet has been buzzing with speculation on the new Dodge compact car, set to sell within a few thousand dollars of the Fiat 500. The new Dodge will have a choice of turbo-Fiat-1.4 and Chrysler 2.4 engines for gearheads, and a 2-liter engine for the frugal; a well appointed interior taking cues from the Charger; and a six-speed transmission, manual or automatic. Set for full production in April (it was originally scheduled for January), three names are being voiced seriously by enthusiasts: Dodge Hornet. This was ruled out by Reid Bigland in an interview recently, but remains the favorite for some observers. It strikes a chord in people who know nothing about cars, largely because of its role in the movie Cars. Some vaguely remember the tie-in to the AMC Hornet, but given how little recognition that car has, the average American will likely think of the Hudson..

Hope not, the competition has a handful of 2.0L "gearhead" oriented engines that are around 200hp already.

depending on the weight of the car and where that power is made it could be an issue or it could be ok.

im just very excited for this car. and from what I have seen it is even better than what I thought it was going to be.and I just want the power options to be just as good.

what the bleep.how did that happen.

WELL im just saying that it sounds like there is only a 30 hp difference from the base model to the rt model I mean the gearhead model.lol
does not seem like gearheadish to me.lol

Toyota Corolla: 108 horsepower or 134 horsepower.  (source; corolland)
Mitsu Lancer: 148 hp
Mazda3: 148 hp
Honda Civic: 140 hp (128 lb-ft!)  -- Si is 201 hp and 170 lb-ft -- but you'll notice SRT4 is coming for Hornet/Dart/Duster!
Nissan Centra: 140 hp

... I do not believe the 185 horsepower 2.4 is Tiger Shark, either. That's late availability and AFAIK is still scheduled to beat Civic Si's own 2.4 engine.

Then wouldn't that make 4 engines?  The 1.4, the 2.0, the 2.4, and the MA 2.4 (Tigershark),  that sounds a bit, err, unusual.  Something tells me one those won't end up being there.

Dart and Valiant are the only 40 plus year old cars around here still being used as daily drivers. These must have been the most durable cars ever.

Tiger Shark could be reserved for the mid-sized cars OR it could be the SRT engine. I don't know. It might even be the 185 horsepower mill. The rumors were talking about 240 hp which I assumed meant 200 hp but... well, maybe they retuned it for max torque instead.

Note: people thought the Neon was really quick when it came out with its 132 hp engine (129 lb-ft), easily beating Civic EX (125/100) -- it did 0-60 in 7.8 seconds. Now it seems like people are considering that to be sluggish... 0-60 times in the 1950s were measured in minutes ;)  (no not really)

Same with my 95 dohc ACR (sedan).. oddly enough. And I usually drove it at about 80mph on the fwy.
My 98 dohc Sport (sedan), ironically got less milage.. like 35ish, and they had the same..ish.. engine. lol
