Chrysler has recently applied for or renewed various trademarks, according to analyst Jim Choate. Of note is Cherokee, for "Motor vehicles, namely, passenger automobiles, their structural parts, trim and badges." This could indicate that the Jeep Cherokee name will return, replacing Liberty -- which was originally to be simply the next generation Cherokee. It also may be a move on Chrysler's part to simplify things; trademarking Cherokee would also protect "Grand Cherokee," which is currently registered to Chrysler LLC, the company Cerberus created when it acquired control of Chrysler from Daimler and is good through 2014. The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) notes that ownership of the mark was not automatically transferred to Chrysler Group LLC, the current entity. While the Plymouth logo was renewed for the fifth time, this does not indicate that Plymouth is to return; numerous classic names are frequently renewed and used in displays,..

Very interesting news... I always thought that if they made the Patriot a little larger it could have been named the Cherokee. Would love to see this name on a proper Jeep(possibly the Liberty replacement) but I worry it may go on a Fiat based small Jeep.

It looks like the next Jeeps are going to be incapable of traversing a speed bump, lol.  At least we still have the Wrangler, if you want that truly rugged feel in a sport utility.  Would be real nice to see solid axles, front and rear, on a new Cherokee.  We already have a fully independent suspension SUV with high tech features.  Pipe dream, purely a pipe dream.

If you look up the exterior dimensions of the 2001 Cherokee and the Patriot now, the Patriot is a little bigger all around.  The Patriot (IMO) is the proper replacement for the Cherokee.

They took the whole Cherokee nation
Put us on independent suspensions
Took away our ways of life
The solid axle and the bow and knife
Took away our manual transfer case
And taught their brake based traction aids to our young
And all the trails we made by hand
Are nowadays paved roads that are bland

Cherokee people, Cherokee tribe
So proud to wheel, no IFS we'd rather die

They took the whole Cherokee nation
without lockers we had reservations
Though I wear a shirt and tie
I'm still a Jeeper deep inside

Cherokee people, Cherokee tribe
So proud to wheel, No IFS we'd rather die

But maybe someday when they learn
Cherokee nation will return, will return, will return, will return, will return

no insult to the Patriot... just not exactly a Cherokee. A sick part of me still longs to find a 4x4 Patriot in manual someday and go out on the trails with it for kicks

Patriot feels smaller inside and you have to get a running start to pass on 2 lane roads. I never had to get a running start to pass with my 97 Cherokee The 08 Patriot was an exercise in terror to pass anything with and it always sounded like was going to throw the pistons thru the hood doing it.

Maybe some enterprising company can work a deal and bring the Jeep 2500 back "home".

If Jeep is to become an international brand, it does not make sense to sell the same vehicle in North America as Liberty and outside North America as Cherokee.

Using the same name in all markets reinforces the brand.

Well, with all the new safety features and requirements, the Patriot is a little smaller on the inside.  Exterior dimensions are a bit bigger.  One thing to consider, the Cherokee sat up higher (higher center of gravity) and probably had thinner doors/sides. etc. The Patriot has longer "sides" and the styling makes it look lower than the Cherokee.  Also, the Patriot does not have the old Cherokee's V6, and that CV automatic wasn't very "Jeep" like at all.  If you can find a 5 speed manual 4X4 Patriot, your a bit closer to the old Cherokee.  In the basic "looks" department, the Patriot looks more like the old Cherokee than the Liberty ever did, IMO.

V6? Even the XJ only had the GM 2.8 for a couple or 3 years...until the AMC 4.0l inline 6 came out.

Or are you referring to the I6? I'm so confused......

He may have been a Chrysler salesman, I've had many show me the new 4.0 V-6....and argue with me, even after I made them open the hood. ;)

I could not agree more. It is my hope that they bring the Cherokee name back to the US with a vehicle that is a true successor to the XJ. My first vehicle was a 1984 Jeep Wagoneer XJ that started out as a company car that my dad bought when we was working at AMC and he was promoted and we moved here to Detroit from Cincinnati. Following that we had a succession of Cherokees - company leases and family owned - up until they were no longer made. I never would have thought that they would abandon the Cherokee name.

I think some people naturally think it is a V6 and not an I6.

My hope too, however if you have seen the new Dart, you have also seen the new Compass. Now, just squint and make that CUSW become CUSW-Plus and you have seen the new Libertykee ®.
