Norm-
whats your take on the Compass? IMO it makes the compass how it should have always looked. More off-road and more like a Jeep not a car.
Yes it "looks" better. It's ability to "be" better is not appreciably changed.
The spacer lift is similar to one that was tried on Liberty and it failed to generate much interest, but not from lack of effort on the part of thousands of Liberty owners.
Adding spacers and pucks to the stock springs creates many unforeseen issues with ride, handling and tire wear. In essence you are placing the springs into a permanent jounce mode.
A much better way to accomplish lift is to add progressive rated coil springs and tuned shocks.
The problem with doing that on Compass and with Liberty, is the A arms are too short and the suspension travel too limiting. Once you start to cycle the suspension into a range that Jeep engineers weren't allowed to compensate for, you start having issues with steering geometry and drive axle CV joint failure.
There is not enough adjustment designed into these car suspensions to compensate for the changes in caster and camber caused by these lifts.
The sole functional purpose for a suspension lift is to add larger tires for increased capability, ground clearance, traction and handling. The fender openings on the Compass and Patriot are too small, even with this lift, to accommodate larger tires.
If you could properly raise the Compass and Patriot AND install larger tires that would not rub at every change in terrain, the CVT would not long survive the additional stresses placed upon it.
Unlike JK, XJ and WJ, there was not enough flexibility designed into these newer vehicles to allow any changes or upgrading by the aftermarket, not at least without considerable expense and extreme modifications.
That, in a nutshell, is what is wrong with the premise of turning cars into Jeeps.
I should add, that unless you have the Freedom Drive II with low range, the larger tires would create havoc with the 4 cylinder engines ability to move the Compass in rough terrain.
