Chrysler’s primary focus at this year’s Geneva Motor Show is the 2014 Jeep® Grand Cherokee, which both gained a facelift and a new across-the-board eight-speed automatic transmission.
Jeep had the largest stand of the Chrysler-FIAT group. The map of the showrooms does not show that right away, because almost all of the space at the Jeep-area was usable, while at the other stands, sometimes almost half of the space was hidden behind walls and screens, being used internally or for special guests.
They had four Grand Cherokee 2014 Diesels there, with lots of room around them, two Overlands and two Summits. The VM Diesel has 250hp now (instead of 240hp before), the “weaker” one stays at 190hp. Two Wrangler and two Compass were there as well.
It was also the European debut for the 2014 Jeep Compass, a relatively strong seller for Jeep worldwide; the Compass gained a revised interior and exterior, a conventional six-speed automatic transmission, and new safety features. A new LE version sports black details and new 18” wheels, with a six-speed manual and 2.2L TurboDiesel engine (136HP and 320Nm of torque) with either front wheel drive or the basic all-wheel drive system; it is priced at around 30,000 euros (around $39,000).
The new 4C undisputedly (if you leave “LaFerrari” aside) was one of the stars of the show. They had three pieces there: “rosso alfa,” grey metallic, and matte white. The cars were locked, but sometimes opened on demand. The most obvious difference to the concept (presented at the same place two years ago) is the headlights, which are, to put it mildly, a matter of controversy.
They also had a carbon monocoque, or unibody, on display (the “core” of the 4C), and the 240hp 1.8TBi all-aluminium engine (which must be derived in some way from the QV (Quadrifoglio Verde, or green shamrock) Sports-Edition of the Giulietta, which was also there, with two new “Veloce” Giulietta Trimlevels.
The small MiTo was shown in the form of Limited Edition SuperBike Trimlevel.
I do not really know what for (but I guess, it was an attempt to show advanced technology), they had two 3D printers/plotters on display, which produced little 4C-Logos. Visitors could receive little gifts with this logo on, like cuff buttons or little boxes for you business cards.
The Alfa Romeo 4C is to be sold, in very limited numbers, in the United States as well as in Europe. The Launch Edition 4C was unveiled in a unique white color (red will be optional); the price was quoted as 60,000 euros, including value-added tax, which indicates that the U.S. price would be roughly $61,200 before tax (60,000 euros was $78,000 at the time of the announcement, but value added tax rates are steep, as they pay for health care, averaging 21.6% in Europe.)
The 4C is a two-seater; its exclusive reliance on expensive but strong and lightweight materials kept the weight well below 2,000 lb (that means, lighter than a K-car or 1979 VW), so that the 1.8 liter engine could perform sports-car feats.
The Geneva show also saw the European unveiling of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition. Jeep’s sales grew by almost 205 in Europe for 2012, setting an all-time global sales record (700,000 vehicles).
The Jeep Grand Cherokee has standard bi-xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lights (DRLs), Natura Plus leather, high-quality wood, and a new three-spoke steering wheel, along with the revised Uconnect system with 8.4-inch touchscreen and the 7-inch TFT customer configurable display cluster. The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be introduced across Europe in the third quarter of 2013, in Laredo, Limited, Overland, and Summit trim.
Compass comes with standard air conditioning, power/heated exterior mirrors, fog lamps, keyless entry, Cruise Control, a removable/rechargeable light, Electronic Stability Control, Electronic Roll Mitigation, Hill-Start Assist, anti-lock disc brakes and 60/40 fold-flat rear seat. The 2014 Jeep Compass will be introduced across Europe in the second half of 2013 in three different trim levels, with the existing Sport and Limited and the new North model.
The new Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition special-edition model of the iconic Jeep Wrangler will be available as a two-door Wrangler or four-door Wrangler Unlimited, both powered by petrol or diesel powertrains. It too will launch in the third quarter.
A new, interactive leaflet of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available to the public; all video contained in the leaflet will also be available in “augmented reality” on all mobile devices, smartphones and tablets. After downloading the AR-Code mobile application from App Store and major Android platforms, the user can frame the images contained in the leaflet, from the cover to the last page, and access the related video material. The videos will also be released on the Web and social media.
The 1056 square-meter Jeep area in Hall 5 also hosts a merchandising corner for the Jeep lifestyle collection. Jeep is sponsoring (35 million euros for the next three years) the famous, traditional soccer team “Juventus Turin,” record Italian champions.
On all stands of the Group, they had big Mopar touchscreens. They want to promote the Mopar brand all over. You had to answer some simple questions, then you would receive a little gift, like a keyring-flashlight.
Maserati had the European debut of the Quattroporte-5, four pieces of them. GranCabrio was there and GranTurismo. The GT MC Stradale (the “street legal” version of the race-variant of GranTurismo) got seats for the second row.
Ram and Dodge are not officially sold in Europe any more, but Switzerland has some history of buying American cars, and two dealers in Switzerland are doing the import and the homologation on their own. They are supported by Chrysler in some way. They had there a Dodge Durango, a 2013 SRT Viper (decision not taken yet if the car will be fitted for Europe), an SRT Charger, and an RAM 1500 Hemi.
Abarth is a brand of its own in Europe, and had three Abarth 695 “fuoriserie” (695 references to a historical Abarth with 690 cubic centimeters and 38 hp) and a Punto Supersport. They had a setup of two videogames, where you could do car races.
The FIAT-stand was quite big, but not so much news here. Three Panda 4x4s (new: two tone painting), two Puntos, three 500L (Trekking Edition has not been on display in Europe before) and a series of 500: 500C, 500GQ “Gentlemen’s Quarterly” Magazine Edition, new 500s (with some “sporty” trim and all four different engines available here) and, Special Guest from California: 500e.
Fiat also had the Dodge Journey/Fiat Freemont AWD Lounge Edition 170hp Diesel Automatic, a very well equipped variation. If you press “like” at the Fiat Facebook page and show it to the girls, you would receive a litte Hot Wheels Panda.
Ferrari plays in a leage at its own. LaFerrari Supercar beats everything else. 499 pieces limited editon. 1 million euros. Customers hand-selected. Bad luck for McLaren and Lamborghini, that P1 and Veneno have been released at the same time.
The only news on the Lancia stand was the 178hp Voyager Diesel (instead of 163hp). It was on display side-by-side with two Ypsilon, one Delta, one Flavia and one Thema Pentastar AWD. We are still waiting for the Diesel 8-speed and the Diesel AWD. Ypsilon was shown in the new “elefantino” trim-level, which resembles a successful trim level of the (old) Ypsilon 843. It features a black rear door, special colors and some other goodies.
New is also the “S by MOMOdesign” trim-level, which was shown on Delta and Ypsilon: very sporty, powerful engines, special colors and wheels and option. The stand itself is placed very well: right between Maserati and Rolls Royce.
