Chrysler Minivans: US Powertrains 1984-2003
The data presented in the following tables are drawn from Chrysler-issued data books and sales brochures for each model year. In some cases, there is variability in what is reported in different sources for the same model year. I have tried to note the differences in the footnotes that follow the affected tables. Please pay close attention to the footnotes for the tables—engine and transaxle options were highly dependent on trim levels and option packages, especially in the post-1995 models.
For several model years beginning in 1995, a CNG-fueled version of the 3.3L V6 was available on certain Voyagers and Caravans. This was a mainly a fleet-only option so I don't list it in the regular powertrain tables. Horsepower and torque figures were much reduced from the standard gasoline-fueled versions of the same engine. Also, a FFV (Flexible Fuel) version of the 3.3L V6 was available beginning in the 1998 model year. Horsepower and Torque ratings were the same as the gasoline version. The FFV engines were available in most states except CA, NY, MA and VT.
All engines listed in the following tables are Chrysler-designed and -built, except for the 2.6L 4-cylinder and the 3.0L V6 engines. These last two engines were sourced from Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.

These powertrains were available on 1987 minivans at the beginning of the model year. Mid-year in 1987, new powertrains were introduced and the powertrains listed above were discontinued.

3.0 V6 was outsourced from Mitsubishi and modified to fit Chrysler automatic. 2.5 liter is an extended-stroke version of the 2.2 and always has fuel injection (unless turbocharged or Mexican, always throttle-body: single injector).

(2) I have seen one 1989 Grand Caravan SE equipped with the 2.5L Turbo Engine and 3-spd auto trans from the factory.
2.5 turbo engines look attractive from the horsepower rating, but unless they are tweaked to run much higher boost (or given intercoolers), they are fairly sluggish with the automatic. The ideal combination is the turbo with five-speed, a rare and sought after combination today. Gus Mahon made a name for himself by running 13-second quarter-miles with a turbovan that he modified at fairly low cost.
