Ram is readying a facelift for its heavy-duty truck lineup, and KGP just caught a revamped 2014 Ram 3500 (?) Dualie prototype testing on public roads.
A major overhaul is planned for the full-size Ram trucks in the 2017/2018 time-frame; the updated truck, though, seems to be an answer to the recently updated Ford Super Duty and the new GM heavy-duty pickups that are soon to arrive.
The Ram 3500 and 2500 get a new grille, along with other front fascia tweaks. We expect that a lot of the interior changes and upgrades recently applied to the 1500 will be put into action on the heavy-duty models.
One other noteworthy aspect that is clearly visible on this prototype is the massive front control arm seen underneath the bodywork. This change may signal an overall beefing-up of the chassis, to make it more rugged and durable, able to handle even greater payloads. Meaningful, nuts-and-bolts improvements–the kind of things that matter to serious truck buyers.
Expect a diesel power boost to 800 lb-ft with capacity boosts for both diesel and gas engines. Reliable source Dom said that there would be a 6.4 Hemi option for the Ram heavy duty trucks, along with a new transmission to compete with the GM’s Allisons. (We expect an Aisin, which Dodge already uses.)
Heavy duty Ram pickups will be getting an optional air suspension setup, according to several sources. The Long Hauler concept used a Kelderman air suspension in front and rear, for higher capacity with a smoother ride; that model was based on the Ram 5500, which has a leaf-spring rear suspension. The Long Hauler now appears to be a “go” for production. More 2014 Ram Heavy Duty information.
The presence of the Long Hauler suggests that there might be Ram pickups beyond 3500, as well. Danno wrote, “Looks more like a 4500 or 5500 to me: look at the size of the side windows in relation to the height of the door skin.” Ford has an F-450 pickup, and it would not be outrageous for Ram to consider matching it, if it has been selling well. This would be even more likely in light of Ram’s strategy of having every niche filled, for fleet buyers who want to standardize on just one brand: any company that can fill every possible commercial need would fare better. That partly explains the commercial van choices, given the size of the market and Ram’s likely penetration.
