Reliable source oh2o wrote that Chrysler will be switching over from the ZF 8HP45, the transmission currently used in the Charger V6 and 300/300C V6, to the new 845RE early next month. “This is what caused the recent ‘Hemi to get 8-speed in February’ reports/rumors.” Sources may have incorrectly assumed that the “new” transmission was for the Hemi cars.
The 845RE name indicates that the transmission has 8 speeds, a moderately high torque rating (4), rear wheel drive intent, and fully electronic controls; the “5” indicates the fifth revision of the transmission. It can, and will, be used with both 4×4 (in Rams and Jeeps) and AWD setups.
Known differences between the 8HP45 and 845RE include, according to oh2o, the 845RE’s clutches (which have extra friction plates for better performance) and, for some vehicles, a higher capacity oil pan. oh2o wrote that many internal parts do not interchange between the 845RE and 8HP45. The 845RE is to be built by Chrysler itself, in the Kokomo plant which also made the 65RFE and 545RFE.
