Cherokee SRT coming?

Allpar has been told that a Jeep Cherokee SRT is coming, using a hopped-up engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The car is likely to be an all wheel drive version, not surprising given potential traction and handling issues with front wheel drive.

So far, there is no word on which engine the Cherokee SRT would use; Maserati has its own 3-liter twin-turbo V6 pushing out over 400 horsepower, but that is likely too pricey for an SRT. A turbocharged 3-liter Pentastar V6 has long been on the planning books, with a single turbo guestimated at 375 horsepower and a twin turbo at 410.

The 2.4 turbo engine would likely beat 300 horsepower, but with the standard V6 coming in at nearly that level, it doesn’t seem practical for SRT. That could preclude making a Dart SRT with the same powertrain, but would simplify the creation of a next-generation Chrysler 200 SRT.

The Cherokee SRT would be unusual for its category, and could help to spread the word of the new vehicle. Cherokee is reportedly in production with front drive cars coming first, and Trail Rated 4x4s still to come.
