Supercharged Challenger engine shots and more

Glenn Paulina caught an unmistakeable view of the Dodge Challenger with its Hellcat supercharged Hemi V8 engine. The 2015 prototype’s raised hood revealed the supercharger sitting high in the engine bay.

Allpar was, if not the first to report the existence of the Hellcat supercharged 6.2 Hemi, one of the very first.

Challengers wearing front fascia camouflage have been photographed for a year now, with an enormous test group running through Death Valley this summer.

Due in 2014 as a 2015 model, the Hellcat-powered Challenger is Ralph Gilles’ answer to the Camaro ZL1, Camaro Z/28, and Mustang GT500; buyers can expect to pay a hefty premium for the more powerful package, as they do at GM and Ford.

The covers hides what appears to be a new lower air intake for deeper engine breathing; the exhaust looks different, and may require a new rear bumper design.

Allpar’s sources have said that the car will use the ZF HP90 automatic transmission, an eight-speed capable of around 650 lb-ft of torque. That sets an upper limit on the 6.2’s power output; horsepower is undetermined, with our sources still saying that Chrysler is shooting for 700, and our conservative, jaundiced view suggesting it will most likely be in the 600-650 hp range.

The V10 Viper has 640 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, but weighs around 600-800 pounds less, and torque “under the curve” is likely higher in the Viper.
