Jeep Brasileiro?

The Fiat plan for Brazil shows some vehicles not seen elsewhere.  Render-artist JackRatchett speculated, “How about a Brazilian built A-B segment Jeep geared towards South America and India, called the Jeep Brasileiro in Brazil? It could be made with an open top, or full door/attachable hard top, like Wrangler. With concepts like the  Volkswagen Buggy Up,  Renault’s Kwid, Suzuki’s Crosshiker and X-LANDER, Land Rover Defender DC 100, [and a proposed new Toyota under RAV4], everyone’s circling the target, so it’s only a matter of time.”

Presumably powered by a choice of Fiat diesel and Chrysler-descended Brazilian gasoline/flex engine, the Brasileiro would have a tough, durable, but inexpensive suspension designed to take a pounding but not necessarily do much rock crawling. Transmissions would be six-speed Fiat designs, manual and automatic, and all wheel drive (perhaps even plain 4×4) would be relatively simple — no five-mode traction control.

There’s no way of knowing whether JackRatchett’s speculation is anywhere near Fiat’s plans, but we know Fiat wants Jeep to be worldwide; whether it wants Jeep to play in this segment is another question, as is whether it would be superfluous to the BU, or too damaging to Fiat’s plans for Jeep to be a premium purchase.

So far, according to Automotive News’ groundbreaking report, only Jaguar and BMW have been given permission to sell diesels in the US. Others have to wait, pending testing clearance, thanks to Audi-Volkswagen cheats.

What do you think of the “Chief” blue? (updated)

Jeep is set to launch a new color, “Chief,” according to James Mooney — who backed up his assertion with an image from the Jeep brochure available on-line.

The color hasn’t hit the Build & Price system yet. It seems to hearken back to the popular bright blues of the 1970s and 1990s; we have also  seen a 1920s Chrysler in a slightly more aquamarine, but still factory,
