Pickups to get standard tow ratings

by David Zatz on

2011 Ram 1500

Automotive News reported today that, after years of delay, GM, Ford, and Chrysler will use common standards (SAE J2807) to rate their light-duty pickups’ tow ratings. This will cover vehicles up to the Ram/Silverado 3500 and Ford F-350.

The four largest pickup sellers in America (with Toyota) had agreed to use standard tow ratings starting in 2013, and Toyota has already started meeting the new standard.

Ford, which broke the accord when it refused to comply for the 2013 model year, has now said it would start in 2015. GM rushed to reprint marketing materials and owners’ manuals, as it had already started to comply.

GM and Chrysler will both use the standard if Ford does. Nissan started on the 2013 Pathfinder, and will continue with the 2015 Titan. Ram will start with the 2015 model year.

Towing standards do not only include factors such as frame and transmission strength; they also cover cooling, the ability to climb long grades without losing too much speed, braking, and many other factors deemed necessary for safe towing. Original article.
