BraunAbility Pacifica (video)

by David Zatz on

Braun already announced their wheelchair-accessible Chrysler Pacifica minivan; Chrysler will show it later today at the Chicago Auto Show.

BraunAbility changes

The most spacious wheelchair-accessible vehicle in the industry, the BraunAbility Chrysler Pacifica has a sliding door extension and the industry’s widest side-entry ramp, with “rear-axle space innovations” and cantilevered seat bases to increase interior space by ten inches.

BraunAbility crash-tests and shares suppliers with Chrysler. The partners both support the “Give a Dog a Job” program to increase the availability of trained assistance dogs.

Chrysler doesn’t provide much detail, but BraunAbility does. The minivan is heavily modified, with a new subfloor, revised suspension, altered fuel tank, new lines and hoses, relocated rear seats, removable front seats, integrated ramp, and custom exterior panels (including front door steps).

Over 45 years ago, BraunAbility founder Ralph Braun, a wheelchair user, designed and installed a hydraulic wheelchair lift in a 1972 Dodge Ram Van, the world’s first commercialized wheelchair-accessible vehicle. BraunAbility has modified Chrysler, Dodge, Toyota, and Honda minivans for accessibility; making, for example, the Dodge Caravan Entervan.
