Dodge Viper sets new track record in Germany

The 2009 Dodge Viper ACR has broken the street-legal production car record at Germany’s Nürburgring race track, with a third-party certified time of 7 minutes, 22.1 seconds.

The 12.93-mile Nürburgring is a race track in Nürburg, Germany, built in the 1920s and considered by many to be the most demanding purpose-built race track in the world. SRT engineers with no experience at the track had one day to prepare, and one day to fly around the track. In just his third lap, Tom Coronel, who raced the Dodge Viper at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, set a record (surpassing the prior certified time of 7 minutes, 34 seconds) – which he then proceeded to break just two laps later.

Lap times were:

Lap 1 7:42.7
Lap 2 7:35.0
Lap 3 7:24.1 (Prior record broken)
Lap 4 7:24.9
Lap 5 7:22.1 (Record)
Lap 6 7:24.5

The 600-horsepower 2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR is a street-legal Viper engineered for track use, but with street legal specifications. Modifications from the standard Dodge Viper include suspension changes, weight reductions, track/street tires, and aerodynamic improvements yielding 1,200 lbs. of downforce at 150 mph.
