Allpar readers weigh in on the GM deal

Allpar surveyed its readers this week as part of its tenth anniversary celebration. One hastily added question was answered by 290 people:

GM buying Chrysler would/will:
Cause immense damage to Chrysler 23%
Destroy Chrysler, leaving a pale imitation 37%
Help Chrysler a little 4%
Not hurt much 3%
Save Chrysler from death 3%

The survey also found a good deal of concern over the GM-Chrysler hookup in its question, “What is the biggest surprise Chrysler will spring on us before December 1, 2008?”

254 readers had responded as of this morning; 148 of them made a comment in this space regarding the GM deal, including “can we expect a bow-tie above the pentastar?” and “Only Jeep survives as an independent name plate. Minivans are marketed under GM nameplates.” Generally, these responses were negative, some very angry. Some people were favorable, saying that the deal would save both companies.

Another ten mentioned the possible merger of Chrysler with Nissan/Renault. Four simply said the big surprise would be that Chrysler was gone.

One respondent wrote: “December 1, 2008, has come and gone. And I doubt there’ll be any big surprises left before the end of November this year.” This was followed by the opposite, “I don’t think anything big will happen by then.”

Other comments included, “They will make a profit”, “an IPO offering,” and “Buying themselves out from Cerberus.”

The full results will be posted in early November.
