Daimler: cutting in North America, not Germany

Andreas Renschler told the Associated Press that Daimler AG’s truck empire will not cut hours in its German plants, but could continue slashing Daimler Trucks North America, which includes the remains of Sterling and Freightliner. In contrast, Mercedes will be increasing its holiday shutdown and may cut working hours.

Daimler Trucks North America has already dropped the Sterling brand in the United States, closing its Canadian factory and ending at least 3,500 jobs; Freightliner’s rolls have also, again, been cut. However, Daimler intends to open a new factory in Mexico in 2009.
