Frank Klegon: next-gen big cars to get better mileage
According to Automotive News, Chrysler’s Frank Klegon said that the next-generation LX series (apparently re-classified from LY) will have strong gas mileage improvements, through better aerodynamics, new transmissions, revised axle ratios (this has already been implemented for Charger squad cars), and engine upgrades. The Phoenix engines will naturally be used, with variable valve timing and possibly direct injection and cylinder shutoff. Klegon also said Chrysler might use an eight-speed automatic; ZF currently supplies these to BMW, but Chrysler, GM, or Mercedes are also potential suppliers given the 2011 time-frame for the next Charger, 300, and (possibly) Challenger. Klegon said that the gas mileage of the rear-wheel-drive cars would beat 2011 EPA fleet requirements (gas mileage standards are set to rise every year under current long-term legislation.)
