Chrysler plants could be idled in Canadian parts dispute
Several North American Chrysler plants might have to halt production if the automaker and one of its suppliers are unable to resolve a dispute.
About 80 members of Canadian Auto Workers Local 195 have occupied a plant owned by Aradco Management ULC as part of an effort to prevent Chrysler from removing its tooling. Aradco made motor mounts and other metal parts for Chrysler which accounted for almost all of the plant’s business but, according to Dave Domzal, an attorney for Catalin Precision Products, Inc., Aradco’s parent company, the carmaker terminated all its contracts earlier this week and obtained a court order allowing it to remove its tooling. Windsor police officers came to the plant, but the workers prevented them from entering.
The workers are demanding termination and severance pay from Aradco. Chrysler offered the workers $205,000 but it was refused.
Chrysler and Catalina Precision Products are embroiled in a dispute over debts, with Chrysler claiming Aradco owes it for steel Chrysler had purchased and Catalina Precision claiming Chrysler owes it $2 million.
