Dodge competitive in accident-prone Darlington race
The Darlington Southern 500 had a record 17 cautions. Nearly half of the 43 starting cars were involved in collisions. All seven Dodge teams were competitive and all finished, with four Dodges running in the top 10 at one point; however, none finished in the top ten. Elliott Sadler, finishing in 14th place, was the top Dodge team. He had led once.
Kurt Busch, who is now third in points (55 points behind the leader), had handling problems; he finished 16th. He has been in the top 20 in ten out of the first 11 races. Busch’s Charger was set up too loose at first, and when they started adjusting the car’s balance was thrown off. The last 100 laps presented numerous obstacles as the leaders of the race spun out and hit the wall.
AJ Allmendinger finished 17th and Reed Sorenson finished 19th. Kasey Kahne was in the top ten during a pile-up in front, and had to make an unscheduled pit stop when the car was damaged; he finished 23rd. David Stremme was put into the wall when he was near the top ten. Sam Hornish was in the top 15 when, again, he had to make an unscheduled green-flag pit stop. He finished 30th.
