“Cash for Guzzlers” still available as Washington searches for more money
Rumors to the contrary, the government’s Cash Allowance Rebate System (CARS) is still up and running even though it is perilously close to running out of money after just six days in operation.
A White House spokesperson said, “It is not suspended. We continue to assess the program and its budget.”
A National Automobile Dealers Association survey showed a backlog of as many as 200,000 pending claims. At the maximum amount of $4,500 each, those claims would almost deplete the $1 billion approved for the program which was supposed to last through October. As of yesterday, 22,782 claims had been filed by dealers for a total of $95.9 million.
