Chevrolet Caprice cancelled

According to Bob Lutz’s blog, quoted by Automotive News, GM has dropped plans to convert the Pontiac G8 into a new Chevrolet Caprice, and to sell a police pursuit version of the car.

The G8 is a roughly even match for the Dodge Charger in dimensions, V8 power, and architecture. Developed in Australia, it has received positive reviews in the American press and was the basis for the Chevrolet Camaro.

Lutz cited numerous reasons for dropping the project, most notably being its lack of fit with the Chevrolet brand and cost; he also noted future regulations and market demand for higher gas mileage as reasons why the development cost would be too high. It is still possible that a version of the G8 will be resurrected for Buick or Cadillac; this had been floated earlier but reported cancelled.
