Chrysler cut 8.7 percent of workforce in first half of 2009
Since January, Chrysler LLC and Chrysler Group LLC have shed more than 4,700 employees or about 8.7 percent of its workforce.
Yesterday, the company released figures showing it had 49,637 hourly and salaried employees as of July 1. It had about 54,400 in December 2008. Employee buyout programs are credited with helping the automaker reduce its head count.
Chrysler now employs fewer than 55 of every 100 people who worked for the firm at the end of 2004 when its workforce was close to 91,000.
