Fiat 500 in Mexico, engines in Michigan
Detroit News quoted a Wall Street Journal report as saying that Chrysler would build the Fiat 500 in Mexico, as predicted months ago. The engines may be built in Trenton, Michigan, using capacity not needed for the World Engine.
The Toluca plant builds the PT Cruiser and Dodge Journey. The PT has recently been extended one more year, but the Fiat 500 will not be ready for production during that time, given the need to bring it into U.S. regulatory compliance. The 500 could also be built in the Saltillo truck plant, but that is less likely, especially given the closure of the St. Louis (Fentonville) truck plant.
Rumor has the 500 being built under the Fiat name – the only Fiat-branded vehicle planned for the United States.
