Project 1320, 1970 cars coming to CEMA

On Saturday, June 12, 2010, the Chrysler Employee Motorsport Association will welcome automotive enthusiasts to its 21st Annual Car Show, which will also host the first Allpar meet in Michigan since 2005.

This year, CEMA is celebrating the 1970 model year, when the ‘Cuda, Challenger, AMX, and others prowled the streets of Detroit. There will be a great selection of these cars on display along with vehicles produced from the 1930s to 2010.

The show is held on the grounds of the Walter P. Chrysler Museum, located at Featherstone and Squirrel Roads in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Proceeds from the show benefit the Museum Foundatiom, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Registration begins at 8:00 AM and the show officially opens at 9:00 AM.

There will be three presentations during the show:

At 10:00 AM in the Museum’s Auditorium, Charles Hyde will discuss his latest book, “Storied Independent Automakers: Nash, Hudson, and American Motors.” Among Dr. Hyde’s other books are “The Dodge Brothers, The Men, The Motor Cars, and The Legacy”, and “Riding the Roller Coaster: A History of the Chrysler Corporation.” Dr. Hyde is a professor at Wayne State University.

At 11:15 AM, Larry Shepard, “Mr. Mopar,” will be conducting a Performance Clinic at the main entrance to the Museum. Larry is a former Chrysler engineer and worked in Mopar Performance, the high performance parts division.

Speaking at 12:30 PM in the Museum’s Auditorium will be David Rockwell, author of “We Were the Ramchargers – Inside Drag Racing’s Legendary Team.” This book takes you behind the scenes with the group of Chrysler engineers who became one of the most successful drag racing teams of all time. Dr. Rockwell is a professor at Michigan State University.

CEMA welcomes “Project 1320,” a fairly new organization on a mission to record the stories of early drag racers. They will be filming the stories of the Ramchargers during their visit. Local racer Wally Booth is on the Project 1320 Advisory Board and will be present along with his two famous Pro Stock cars, the 1973 AMC “Gremlin X” and the 1973 AMC Hornet “AMC Special.”

Dodge Marketing and several aftermarket performance upgrade manufacturers will display some radical vehicles including a Viper-powered Dodge Challenger! (Allpar itself will be showing, courtesy of Dodge, a 2010 Challenger R/T stick-shift.)

The cost of vehicle registration is $20, for any makes of car, truck, or motorcycle. The car show is free to spectators but there will be a $4 group rate admission fee for the museum the day of the show. Those who register to show their cars have free admission to the museum, and Allpar may have extra museum tickets.
