House committee to investigate California rep who sponsored dealer exemption
Republican John Campbell, the Representative from California’s conservative 48th District, has been under scrutiny by the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent office led by two former members of congress, David Skaggs, a Colorado Democrat, and Porter Goss, a Republican from Florida. Campbell, a former car dealer, is the congressman who sponsored an amendment exempting dealers from oversight by the new agency that will be regulating consumer financial products, such as credit cards and mortgages.
At issue is whether Campbell acted improperly by engaging in fundraising last December during voting on the financial reform legislation. The OCE has completed its inquiry and referred their findings to the House Ethics Committee for further investigation. Campbell is one of three House members whose cases have been sent to the committee.
On December 2 last year, the legislation was passed by the House Financial Services Committee It was passed by the full House on December 11. Campbell is a member of the committee. During the same period, two pricey fundraisers were held for Campbell.
