The potential recall we reported in April is now official.

Chrysler is recalling 242,780 2003-2011 Dodge and Ram pickups worldwide because a fracture of the left tie rod ball stud could occur. This could potentially cause a loss of directional stability. There have been what a Chrysler spokesman calls "a few minor accidents and one minor injury."

Included in the recall are 2008-2011 Dodge and Ram 2500/3500 4x4, 2008-2011 Dodge and Ram 3500 Cab Chassis 4x2 and the 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Mega Cab 4x4. In addition, it covers 2003-2008 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 trucks that may have had the affected tie rod assembly installed as a replacement part.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the fractures seem to occur during low speed maneuvers, such as while in a parking lot, when the vehicle operator makes a tight turn.

Dodge dealers will inspect the tie rod ends, replace the left outer tie rod if required and perform a front end toe alignment as needed.

Chrysler has not yet provided a recall schedule to the NHTSA. However, owners of vehicles that might be in the recall can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
