Production ending at Termini Imerese
After 41 years, production at Fiat’s Termini Imerese plant will end next Wednesday, November 23. The official announcement came yesterday in a communication to the FIM, FIOM and UILM unions. About 2,200 workers at the plant will be affected.
Opened in 1970, the plant, located on the island of Sicily, has produced millions of Fiats. Since 2005, Termini Imerese has been the assembly plant for the Lancia Ypsilon.
However, due to its location, the plant has serious, and costly, logistical problems and Fiat determined the plant had to be closed. Even pleas from the Italian government and intercession by the Pope couldn’t sway the decision.
