The supercharged 6.2 Hemi has been rumored for some time now, and though its debut car has changed, the power of the engine reportedly has not. Estimates of 700 horsepower have been floating around, but we believe, in the end, it will be tagged with a still-formidable rating of 550 to 580 horsepower, and around 550 pound-feet of torque.
A new source wrote that the “Hellcat” engine (the internal code is unlikely to be used in marketing material) will be all-aluminum (possibly with steel cylinder liners). At its debut, we’ve been told that all Hellcat-equipped Dodge Challengers will be black, with silver stripes and extra-wide chromed wheels in back; an eight-speed ZF automatic will be standard.
Since the current 845RE can’t handle that much power (it’s rated for 331 lb-ft), the company will either use the rumored 890RE or the ZF 8HP90 transmission, both of which are theoretically good for just over 660 lb-ft (900 Nm). If the power output is restricted or torque-managed, Chrysler could use the current 8HP70 transmission, good for around 515 lb-ft of torque, but it seems more likely they would use the heavier-duty automatic. In the quantities needed, perhaps a few thousand per year, purchasing from ZF would likely be easier than building it in-house.
